2019 FTH Fandom Feature: Buffyverse (TV shows)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a supernatural drama TV series based on the 1992 film of the same name. The series narrative follows the teenaged Buffy Summers, the latest in a line of Vampire Slayers. Vampire Slayers are chosen by fate to battle against vampires and other forces of darkness, and are assisted by a Watcher, who guides, teaches, and trains them. The success of the TV show led to various tie-in products, including Angel, a spin-off series that casts Angel the vampire as protagonist after he moves to Los Angeles following a doomed relationship with Buffy. Angel works as a private detective in L.A, where he and a variety of associates work to "help the helpless", restoring the faith and saving the souls of those who have lost their way.

2019 FTH Fandom Feature: Fullmetal Alchemist (manga and animated TV series)

Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in the fictional country of Amestris, where alchemy is one of the most-practiced sciences. Alchemists have the ability, with the help of patterns called Transmutation Circles, to create almost anything they desire. However, when they do so, they must provide something of equal value in accordance with the Law of Equivalent Exchange. When a failed alchemical ritual leaves brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric with severely damaged bodies, they begin searching for the one thing that can save them; the fabled philosopher's stone.

The TV series diverges dramatically from the manga plot after the 7th volume, and ends with a sequel film, Conqueror of Shamballa, released in 2005. A second anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which closely adapts the manga chapters, was later broadcast in 2009.

2019 FTH Fandom Feature: The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica & The Chronicles of Narnia

The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica is a book series in which three young men are recruited to become the new Caretakers of the Imaginarium Geographica - an atlas of the 'imaginary lands' of the Archipelago of Dreams. John, Jack, and Charles meet authors of great classic works - and several of the characters in them - as they struggle to keep both the book and the Archipelago safe from the Indigo King.

One author whose works get more than a passing nod is C. S. Lewis, whose Chronicles of Narnia are widely known for their fantastical setting and Christian allegory. Each of 7 books in the Chronicles of Narnia is set in the realm of Narnia which exists adjacent to Earth and accessible only via a select few gateways. Part of the series revolves around the adventures of the Pevensie children, who stumble across one such doorway into Narnia and establish the Golden Age of Narnia, leaving a legacy to be rediscovered in later books. The rest of the books have other protagonists and explore Narnia and its inhabitants from different perspectives.

Fan labor? What's that??? Why should I bid on it?

Do you write fanfiction? Then you should definitely take a look at the 39 people offering fan labor in this year’s FTH auction!

A lot gets lumped into this label; each auction will explain what labor, exactly, they’re talking about. But the most common labor offered is beta services.

A beta is your personal fanfiction editor - almost all will edit your fic for spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but many will go further, giving suggestions on things like plot, story structure, and characterization. They can be your best friend if you’re looking to improve your writing, or just polish one particular fic so that readers see your best writing!

Many fic authors would love to have a beta, but don’t know anyone to ask or are hesitant to ask a friend to spend so much time on someone else’s writing. If you’re in that group, FTH is the perfect chance for you to find a beta who is ready and willing to help you out! Who knows, it might even be the start of a beautiful writer/beta relationship that you’ll depend on for years to come.

Another common type of fan labor is culture picking - you may have heard of this as Britpicking, or Americanpicking. If you’re writing fic that’s set in a different country than you live in, a good culture picker will make sure that your readers aren’t thrown out of the story because the characters are using words they would never say, or making travel plans that don’t make sense.

Some people will only beta or culture pick within fandoms they’re familiar with, but many are willing to lend their editing pen to fic in any fandom out there.

Everyone is excited to bid on their favorite fic author or fan artist, but many people don’t realize what an excellent opportunity our fan labor auctions present for writers!

97 years after a nuclear war nuclear apocalypse wipes out almost all life on Earth, the Ark, a spaceship housing humanity's lone survivors, is threatened by over-population. 100 juvenile detainees are sent to Earth in a last attempt to determine whether it is once again habitable. They discover that some survived the apocalypse: the Grounders, the Reapers and the Mountain Men, who live in Mount Weather. Under the leadership of Bellamy and Clarke, the 100 attempt to survive the harsh surface conditions, battle hostile Grounders and establish communication with the Ark.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a pentalogy of fantasy adventure novels that are written in the titular character’s point of view. After a harrowing experience at his high school trip, Percy Jackson returns home for the summer vacation only to discover that he is not just a regular human, but a demigod. His parentage gifts him with special abilities and also puts him in incredible danger, as demigods must quest for the Greek pantheon and earn the approval of their parents, protecting the secret of their existence and keeping the Greek monsters at bay. Together with a group of friends, Percy battles monsters, saves lives and goes on various adventures over the course of the series. There are film adaptations for the first two books, following the same main story points.

FTH 2019 bidding is officially closed! Now what?

If you are the high bidder on one or more auctions, sit tight! Bidders will receive an email tonight or tomorrow listing all the auctions they won.

Before you make your donation(s), double-check the auction post to make sure you’re donating to a group the creator chose! Many leave it up to the bidder, but some creators signed up hoping to generate donations for groups that are particularly meaningful to them, so please respect their choices. Make your donations directly to the charity - none of the money goes through either us or the creator! If they have a space to say the reason for the donation or make it in honor of someone, we’d appreciate if you mention Fandom Trumps Hate.

If all your creators allow donations to the same group, you are welcome to combine your bids into one donation. If you have a large bid and want to spread the love around, you can also split it into smaller donations to multiple groups (as long as they’re all on the creator’s list)! All that we ask is that, when you email us your proof of donation, you specify exactly how much to each group goes with each auction. And yes, you are allowed to donate more than your bid, but this is definitely not required!

Once you’ve made your donations, email us proof - a screenshot of the donation screen with your personal information blacked out works best. We just need to see the name of the organization and the amount donated. Once we receive that, we’ll let your creator know that you’ve donated and give you each other’s email addresses so you can discuss your fanwork!

Proof of donation is due to us by March 8 at 8pm. If we don’t receive your proof by then, the auction will be awarded to the next highest bidder.

If you have any questions or problems during the donation process, please contact us via email at fandomtrumpshate@gmail.com! We are a group of fans working together to run this event, and email is the best way for us all to be able to see a record of our communications. Contacting us on Tumblr or Dreamwidth is not guaranteed to get a response in time!

If you are a creator whose auction received at least one bid, we will let you know as soon as your high bidder has made the donation! If they don’t donate by March 8, we will let you know that the auction is being passed on to the second highest bidder.

If you are a creator whose auction received more than one bid, we will contact you within the next couple of days to see if you’re interested in offering a second fanwork to the second-highest bidder for their bid amount. This is in no way required! Please only make this offer if you are sure you have time to create both fanworks by the end of the year. Creators may make up to one second-chance per auction. If you are the second-highest bidder on an auction, please do not contact the creator directly about this. If the creator chooses to make this offer, we will let you know.

If you didn’t win any of your auctions but still want to support these organizations, you are welcome to make a donation in FTH’s name! Let us know about it and we’ll put you on our list of “Just Because” donations and count it toward the total amount raised by FTH this year.
